This past weekend we started demolition. Being a male I thought destroying stuff would be a lot of fun. It was for about 10 minutes, then after that it reall, really sucked. So for anyone out there who thinks demolition is fun... think again. On the one hand, it's good to see the old crappy stuff go, on the other hand it's probably the hardest part of the project.
This was our first time being on camera doing actual work. The camera guy, Ryan, only gave me one 'scripted' thing to do, which was to take down the mirror while he filmed it. The rest of the time we just went about our business while he recorded. I stuck to breaking wall and floor tile, and Collette ripped up the carpet. Ryan left after about an hour (he just needed some b-roll shots, so what he recorded will probably fill 30 seconds of air time), and everything was going swimingly while he was there, but after he left we both switched to working on ripping up the bathroom floor. We purchased a tile scraper and thought it was all we needed. After a couple more hours of back breaking work we had uncovered about 1.5 square feet of the plywood below the tile and backer board. I decided something needed to change unless we wanted to still be ripping up tile come Sunday evening. So Saturday morning I went to Home Depot and purchased a hand held masonry hammer, which is a small sledge hammer with a flat side, and pointed side. This was a god send. We were able to smash the tile into small enough pieces that allowed us to use the tile scraper to rip up the backer board.

The sitting area in the bedroom with the carpet removed
I have no idea what this is, but it is cut into the laminate under the carpet. Maybe it was something done by the builders in 1935?
This is why carpet sucks. This is all the sand and dirt that was under our carpet. Gross!
I've never tiled, but I'm pretty sure you don't need to put a nail every 3 inches in the backer board
The wall with the plumbing to what was the old vanity and toilet, which by the way, had a leaky seal for god knows how long. The ceiling in the 1st floor bathroom has plaster falling down due to the dampness of the leak
